HERE'S THEIR WEBSITE:
www.manuelstavern.com/

ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER:

Manuel's Tavern
602 N. Highland Ave
Atlanta, GA 30307

404-525-3447

Bring anyone you want!

If you'd like to carpool, post which area of town you'll be coming in from so others can send you a private message or respond right here in the thread.

LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING WHO ALL SHOWS UP!

OK tribe, rubbin' some sticks together here, hoping to get a fire going, or something. For what it's worth: a little story. The 80's, suburban ATL, a kid of 13, eldest born to square parents, trying to figure out the difference between the 'culture' he has access to and a tupperware container. The picture I am hoping to paint for you is - this kid lived in a very sterile place and time. But he had a radio, and one day flipping around on the left end of the FM spectrum, he came across some bizarre sounds. I'm not sure that the first encounter was upon, but let's pretend, it was a sunday night. He heard a show called Personality Crisis, and another called Notes From Underground. The DJ spoke in in this creepy, but intensly interesting, monotone. Or maybe it was a Wednesday night and he heard Atmospherics. The theoretical world got a lot bigger-
Let stick him, for fun's sake, into the lyrics of a VU song for a moment:
And then one evening he turned on an ATL station,
and he couldn't believe what he heard at all-
He started veggin' to that fine, fine music,
yeah his life was saved by - a diversified playlist!

I soon had a conception of industrial music that had more to do with people in state institutions, staving off the effects of thorazine, expressing themselves, experimenting, challenging - than a later definition that came along, that seemed about spoiled bratty rich kids trying to appear angstful (and mysteriously sexy), in latex costumes, rhyming over drum machines in a 3 minute (pop) song format. (Yes, I am ragging on Trent Reznor and his ilk). Sorry chumps, PVC Precint/Flatbush took me further.
And this was just the begining of the education:jazz, nonpolished blues, dub and all sorts of other musics I otherwise knew nothing about, were presented for my sensory intake. It was years before I met anyone else I could talk with this station about. And it stayed by me. Oxford books, another pubescent love, eventually fell apart, The Rhodes Theatre and SIlver Screen closed, but WREK is still what it always was for me, and it's still there. I'm not saying this is the only thing I want to hear on the radio, but it's always a randomized option, THE MOST RANDOMIZED option, if I should choose to check it. I've left ATL and come back many times, I will leave again. As often as I've wanted to say, during a surly moment, 'fuck this souless collection of stripmalls, fuck Atlanta', there is always this one radio station that won't allow me to write this place off entirely. How many of the 4 mil appreciate this resource? It doesn't matter, the signals are transmitted anyway. What is meant to be heard, by those meant to hear it, WILL BE HEARD.
Pardon elements of my story that may strike you as melodramatic, and share your own-

Follow For Now on UR, Jan 1 at 8 PM EST on WREK

January 1 at 8 PM EST, legendary Atlanta funk-thrash band Follow For Now will be featured. This is their performance from April 1989, one of several times they appeared on Live @ WREK.

You can hear this through the air at 91.1 FM in Atlanta, of stream it via MP3 at http://www.wrek.org. If you miss it, it gets archived and you'll have one week to check it back out (although the streaming and archiving have been flaky, so that might not hold.)

This was my favorite Atlanta band of the period, and every time I hear 311 on the radio I get pissed off, because FFN was working that street and doing it much better 15 years ago. As a footnote, I'm not 100% sure but that I wasn't the host of this episode. Maybe not. I did it the first time they were on, and I believe this might be the 2nd or 3rd time.

Jon Kincaid, radio personality as host of WREK's Personality Crisis for just shy of 20 years, is in medical crisis. He had a heart attack earlier this week, and has no medical insurance. A group of his friends are trying to raise money to help defray the staggering cost of medical treatment. There's a web page with information about his situation at www.personalitycrisis.org/ . From that page, you can make a donation via PayPal and get information on how to donate at Bank of America. Please give, forward the links, and get the word out. Jon is one of the bright spots of Atlanta radio, so please help him in his time of need.

This Sundat at 10 PM EST on WREK 91.1 FM, Jeff Clark and Todd Ploharski will be hosting Jon's show for him. They'll be giving out information on how to donate as well. Tune in, give money, tell friends, help out.

Thanks, all.

Gang,

First to reply gets two old photos (I'm finally getting rid of some old doubles)... One is of a former GM, the other of a current show host. Both fine humin' bein's. That's all; this is a mystery giveaway. The pics are somewhat amusing, though.

I will need your mailing address, of course.

You are all a part. Of my rock and roll. Fantasy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

how are the songs selected to get on the air? is it up to the DJ or does it have to be solicited?

Tribe Events for WREK?

I'm thinking about starting to create events for WREK programs. This would not be for the weekly shows, but for Live @ WREK and Underground Recordings where each one is kind of like a special thing. If a specialty show has something out of the ordinary, like a guest or some musican is dropping by or maybe a theme show, that would also be something I could do. What do y'all think about that?

This is an undocumented, experimental thing for right now, but WREK has an RSS feed for their newly programmed material. Check it out at http://www.wrek.org/addlist.xml and add it to your aggregator.
